Greetings from the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC)

Happy August, iSchool students. GSAC would like to congratulate all iSchool students completing the program this summer. To mark this milestone, GSAC and ALA Student Chapter invite graduates to be a part of our Summer 2020 Virtual Yearbook. If you’d like to participate, please email Lauren Zollinger (lzolling@kent.edu). All submissions are due by Wednesday, August 12th

To welcome back new and returning iSchool students, GSAC will be hosting a Virtual Meet and Greet via Zoom at 5pm on Sunday, August 30th, and we would love for you to join us for this informal event! Please contact Brenna Hubschman (bhubschm@kent.edu) for the Zoom link if you’re interested in attending.

GSAC is looking to fill a number of officer positions this semester. We will be accepting nominations until September 1st, so please fill out this form if you are interested in getting more involved and gaining leadership experience. New students are welcome. 

We would like to remind you that GSAC is here to support you throughout the program. Below, we have included additional information about GSAC’s mission and purpose. If you have any questions or concerns as an iSchool student throughout this year, please do not hesitate to reach out to Brenna Hubschman at bhubschm@kent.edu. We look forward to connecting with you and wish everyone luck with their studies this semester!

GSAC Virtual Meet and Greet
Sunday, August 30th, 5pm EST – Online via Zoom
Current iSchool students are invited to join GSAC for a Virtual Meet and Greet! This will be an informal conversation, where you can get to know your classmates, discuss classes, and learn some tips and tricks for navigating the iSchool experience. Contact Brenna Hubschman (bhubschm@kent.edu) for the Zoom link.

GSAC Election Nominations Due
Tuesday, September 1st
Are you interested in getting more involved in your program, gaining leadership experience, and serving the iSchool? If you are a current or incoming iSchool student and wish to nominate yourself for the open positions, please complete this form. The election will be held during the September general meeting.

Holding Space is a nationwide virtual tour that highlights the innovation and impact of libraries on their communities through town halls, round table discussions, and interviews. Learn more about this series here.

OhioNET Digitization Basics Series
September 2nd, September 17, October 6
This webinar series provides an overview of how to plan, execute, and assess a successful digitization project. iSchool students can attend for free by selecting “Kent State University – iSchool” as their organization when registering here.

NEO-RLS Emerging Technology Symposium
September 3rd – September 30th
NEO-RLS is hosting a free, virtual, month-long celebration of making, makerspaces and community engagement. Learn more about the event and register here.

The iSchool Graduate Student Advisory Council will be holding its general election in September and has many officer and representative positions open. Interested in becoming a member of the Kent State ALA Student Chapter? Membership in the ALA Student Chapter is open to any current iSchool student at Kent State University. Though membership in the American Library Association is encouraged, it is not a requirement for a general member. There are no dues for the student chapter.

Joint ALA/OLC Membership

Did you know that as a student, you can join both the American Library Association and the Ohio Library Council for $42? The cost of a student membership is regularly $39 for ALA and $25 for OLC. There are many
benefits of membership including networking opportunities, regular updates on news and events, professional development opportunities, and reduced registration at events.

NEO-RLS Gold Membership

 
Currently enrolled iSchool students are eligible for a FREE Gold Membership to the Northeast Ohio Regional Library System. A Gold Membership provides free access to NEO-RLS’s live workshops and webinars as well as their archived webinars. NEO-RLS’s Gold Membership provides students with professional development in a wide variety of areas while interacting with library professionals in our region as well as with library professionals in the state and across the nation.
